Boxing world says Nelson is a knock-out
JOHNNY Nelson is presented with a world boxing award together with praise for his achievements from the
Minister of Sport Rt. Hon. Richard Caborn MP.
The World Boxing Organisation at their convention meeting in
Fort Lauderdale Florida USA agreed to present the Sheffield boxing star
with their Outstanding Champion Trophy for his achievements in the sport.
Nelson quit the ring in autumn 2008 at 39 years of age after 12 years at the top
of his trade. In that time he defended his WBO cruiserweight title 12 times .
At a ceremony in England at the St Thomas' gym at Wincobank Sheffield where it
all started Mr Caborn said,
" It was a great accolade for Nelson for Sheffield and
for boxing in the UK."
Johnny has been a great inspiration for all kids and this award is fully
deserved. It underlines the success of the gym and what can be achieved from
here.
"He is an ambassador for the sport and a lot of youngsters look up to him".
His former trainer Brendan Ingle said " Johnny Nelson had been a wonderful
inspiration and that he had been great for Sheffield and great for the the gym."
Mr Ingle added: "Johnny first came here when he was just 14 years old and
loved training. He never missed a day. Johnny was very professional all through
and he deserves the award."
